Program Goals

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, Syngene International Limited (“Syngene”) or “we” or “our”) invites applications from Junior Faculty (Assistant Professors or equivalent) engaged in Life Sciences Research at Indian research institutes and universities for Syngene Early Career Research Awards.

In early January 2026, Syngene CSR committee plans to award 3-4 such awards. These awards are intended to help promising junior faculty establish research independence and work on high risk-high reward projects to foster innovative solutions for health care.

This initiative seeks to:

  • Promote cutting-edge research with meaningful societal impact
  • Encourage innovation in technology and healthcare to support national development
  • Foster scientific interactions between academia and industry

Why apply?

  • Funding without any conditions.
  • The award provides opportunities for junior faculty to understand the application of their basic research to solving health care-related problems. It also provides an avenue to networking with industry experts and understanding how medicines are discovered.

We invite applications for research in Life Sciences that advance innovation in drug discovery and development, with a focus on (but not limited to):

  • Novel technologies for chemical synthesis, chemical or biologics manufacturing, disease diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and target validation. Example: Green chemistry initiatives, new cell and gene therapy approaches, high protein yielding cell line, etc.
  • Translational research that helps reduce the use of animals. Example, tissue organoid work for efficacy and toxicology.
  • Development of biomarkers, assays, and disease models that improve the predictability of clinical outcomes. Example: identification of novel biomarkers using omics platforms, humanized disease models of mice, etc.
  • Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to accelerate discovery, analysis, and decision-making. Example: Use of AI/ML to help diagnose disease, for understanding disease biology, etc.

This call is open to junior researchers working at the intersection of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, technology, and computational sciences to address key challenges in modern drug discovery.

  • A PhD degree in life sciences.  Post-doctoral training is a benefit but not necessary.
  • Applicants must be Assistant Professors or Junior Research Faculty, with experience less than or equal to 8 years after PhD as of September 2025.
  • Permanent position in an Indian University or Research Institute.
  • This call is not open to Post-Doctorate Fellows.
  • Each Syngene Early Career Research Award offers funding of INR 50 Lakhs to support high-risk high-reward research of the awardee.
  • Each awardee will be invited to give a research seminar to Syngene and network with Syngene senior researchers.
  • Award payments will be made directly to the University/ Institute on behalf of the awardee, with the expectation that the University/ Institute will disburse the funds accordingly based on the awardee requirements for the research project. The institute will not take any portion of the award towards overhead or other expenses, as this award is given 100% to the individual scientist for recognition of their scientific accomplishments.
  • It is up to the discretion of the awardee how to judiciously utilize the award money.

Should the awardee transfer to another institution within India, the remaining funds may be transferred to the new host university.
